After
Shower
"This
street near my home is part of the old town of
Pasadena. I often stroll down the sidewalk enjoying
the everyday charm of bustling people, passing
cars, and noisy bars. But the moment of the day
that I appreciate most on this street is captured
in this painting: the moment when the dust of
a busy day has just been washed away, when afternoon
has said its good-byes, and evening offers a
familiar greeting."

| Avalon
Bay
"This
is how I remember Catalina's Avalon Bay: even
as I painted in my studio, I could hear the steady
song of cicadas, the laughter of waterfront strollers,
the soft rumble of boat motors, and always, the
undertone of ocean waves gently stroking the
shore. Natural and human notes combined in my
memory have created such a harmony that I believe
that Avalon Bay is my ode to joy."

Cafe
Bella
"On
the beautiful island of Catalina, the day has
just kissed and bid adieu to the tranquil evening.
Islanders and visitors alike, at last escaping
from the day's activities, begin to settle down
to evening meals. The first sip of wine is taken.
Only pigeons pace the passages near the caf?
where the diners earlier rushed. It is then one
smells the warm fragrance of the first course
mixing with the cool salt spray of the ocean
only steps away. What could better soothe a tired
and famished soul?"

Cafe
Prego
"My
favorite time of day is always when the curtain of night
has just begun to fall. It's at that hour that the bustling
day retreats into the wings and the players' masks are
removed, as they join friends and family--or a special
someone--for dinner. It may be hard to believe that one
could find such a tranquil moment in a big city like
San Francisco, but I did find it--in front of Caf? Prego."

Catalina "
"Under
the moonlight, not far from Los Angeles, enchanting
Catalina opens her arms to the exhausted bodies
and souls. I, too, found myself at this moment
welcome there, intoxicated with this dreamlike
evening. Yet this allowed me to see clearly the
innocence of childhood, the intimacy of family
moments, all that is closest to the heart...I
was thus compelled to compose this serenade of
color and light."

City Lights "
"In
the quiet of early evening, I hear fifty years
of jazz and poetry readings flowing out of the
door of Vesuvio; in the fresh, still wet air,
I breathe in the passion that nurtured the Beats'
legacy behind the windows of City Lights. Fashion
always changes, yet spirit forever remains."

Hyde
Street
"Following
a shower at sunset, everything is bathed in the
pure, fresh air of evening. The pleasant smells
of cooking emanating from a quaint bar combined
with the glowing lights make this street corner
a cozy haven where weary hearts can find comfort
and peace.

My
Balcony
"The
setting sun burnishes the most prominent architecture
of San Francisco, leaving the city beneath basking
under the warm glow. As I worked to capture the
astonishing beauty of this moment on canvas from
my balcony, I knew there would always be just
such a balcony in my heart, upon which I could
always indulge in this resplendent view."

Powell
Street
In
1869 the engineer Andrew Hallidie witnessed the
death of five horses, collapsed in an attempt
to pull a too-heavy load up one of the many steep
slopes of San Francisco. A caring man, Hallidie
determined to invent a transportation system
that would eliminate such inhumane tragedies.
He set to work, and four years later, the famous
cable car was born. "One day I strolled
down Powell Street at sunset. As I gazed at the
cable cars, emerging one after another from the
soft wisps of fog lingering in the air, my heart
grew warm: in my eyes the cars were no longer
just unique devices of transportation, but beautiful
symbols of human compassion, which in my view
is the true spirit upon which this city is founded."

Santa
Monia
"This
is the very first painting of the Gold Coast
Series, which marks the turning point of my career.
With this painting, a door was flung open in
my heart, and I suddenly found myself in a realm
filled with passion and vision, with beauty and
joy. To this day, I can still feel the tingle
I felt upon pouring my exultation onto this canvas.
As I painted nearly 200 figures reveling in a
spontaneous street festival on a summer night,
I was likewise celebrating in my own heart."

Transamerica
Pyramid
"As I immersed myself in painting San Francisco,
with its quaint buildings, busy streets, and serene
blue bay, I found myself even more amazed by this particular
scene: the historical and contemporary parts of the
city, each in such contrast to the other, coexist harmoniously
in the windswept fog. As I painted, I suddenly understood
that no matter how the world changes, life will continue,
and the beauty our hearts witness will never fade."

| Waiting
for Captain
"This
painting captures my impression of San Francisco through
a little narrative: two puppies have long ago given
up hope of their owner's, their captain's, return from
a 'voyage' to the night. Having stared above the bank
until their necks ache, they turn their attention to
the water, only to notice a clever little bird that
surely knows behind which window, into which flicker
of candlelight, their captain has vanished. But, of
course, the bird will not reveal the captain's secret…Who
can say that there aren't many such stories taking
place in the shadow of quaint buildings, behind wisps
of fog, or in the golden pool of street lights? In
my mind, a myriad of such fairytale moments enlivens
this romantic town."
