As an artist, I am so privileged to be able to render my memories and dreams more fully and accurately than words ever could. As I painted this scene, I felt as if I had lit a lamp, illuminating my remembrance of Venice: once again, I was regaled with the city’s rich visual feast, wealth of culture, and scope for imagination.

Painting sometimes recalls the moment when I make a wish before blowing out birthday candles. As years pass by and I continue to wield a brush, the blurred and idealized wishes of the past begin to come into focus…Imagine you have just selected a bouquet of fresh flowers at this corner and are rushing to meet your lover--wouldn’t you, too, share my wish that someday a couple will step over a red-carpeted bridge, and hand-in-hand, walk toward the divine palace?

My memory of Venice dates back to the first time I read Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Since then, Venice has burst into living color in my heart. Here I attempt to capture the essence of this bewitching, yet bewildering, transformation: behind every window, each figure is vivid, yet illusory. Concealed by the costume of invisibility, I gaze through each set of eyes to perceive, in amazement, a world that transcends both time and space.

My memory always unfolds from one specific moment, such as this scene, so typical of the resplendent Venice life. At a quaint corner, lush ivy leaves share a piece of gossip, wavelets ripple with the news, and a glance of innocence fascinates one’s youthful dreams. In my heart, Venice is a never-ending film made of frames of such enchanting intimacy.

Among hundreds of bridges in Venice, I found that none is like any other, and each plucks a different string in my heart. Those bridges link the splendid labyrinth created by the city’s culture and history, as well as by my imagination. I am delighted to find myself lost at this corner, where the basic elements of the city--the buildings, the bridges, and the people--are transformed into reflections on the canal, rippling gracefully in the breeze of my memory.

A hungry traveler, I follow an irresistible smell to this charming back street. Here the aroma of Italian cuisine mingles with the tinkle of glasses and silverware, and the laughter from chef and waitresses, harmlessly flirting. The closeness of the alley admits only a narrow margin of evening sky; nevertheless, it casts a glow both vital and divine. Just like the two dogs patiently awaiting their first course, I pause before this inviting family restaurant--but am I as patient?

Morning in Venice, first in the Venice series, expresses my unbridled passion for the breathtaking beauty of this city. The mottled wall, bathed in the warmth of the morning sun, is a calendar spanning thirteen centuries; gazing at each brick, each relief, and each wooden carving on the buildings is like studying every page of this rich history. Besides, how could one doubt that we can travel back in time in these elegant gondolas, still gliding back and forth in the ancient canals?
